No Bark Dog Collar – Electronic Dog Training Collars

As dog training goes, a no bark dog collar is a relatively recent addition to the tools available to trainers. Some trainers are hesitant to use such a new tool, or even any electronic dog training collars at all. However, it’s important to remember that just because these tools are new, doesn’t mean that they aren’t safe or reliable.

Electronic dog training collars are composed of a small electronic device on the dog’s collar. This is usually just a few inches long and weighs only a few ounces – it is designed to be comfortably worn for extended periods of time. The unit is powered by one or more rechargeable batteries. A pair of metallic prongs extend through the collar band and make contact with the dog’s skin.

The device functions by passing an electric current through the prongs, which in turn send an electrical stimulation to the dog. Those who are new to electronic dog training collars sometimes worry that this means the dog is being electrocuted or receiving a harsh shock, but this is inaccurate. When a dog experiences pain or discomfort during training that the training process is hampered. Trainers know this, and so do the designers of electronic dog training collars. These collars have been designed specifically to keep the dog as comfortable as possible. The electrical stimulation that these collars emit is a mild distraction, much like a shock from static electricity. Prolonged stimulation can become very comfortable, but it will never hurt or cause any injury.

A no bark dog collar works by adding in an additional feature. Special sensors within the collar detect when the dog is barking and automatically emit a corrective stimulation. This feature is designed so that a dog’s collar can be worn without the trainer being present, and corrective stimulation will still be applied. A high quality collar will have several important features to ensure that it is applied correctly. The bark sensor on no bark dog collars ideally contains several methods of sensing a bark, such as sonic and vibration. This will prevent the collar from activating accidentally, such as from the barking of a nearby dog or the passing of a large vehicle. No bark dog collars should also have a safety feature to prevent correction from being applied continuously. That way, if a legitimate source of barking presents itself (such as a trespasser or intruder), then only the dog’s initial barking will cause electrical stimulation. After a short time, the dog will be free to bark as much as necessary.

The use of a no bark dog collar is particularly humane. Firstly, because these electronic dog training collars are able to supply such an immediate response, the training time is significantly shortened when compared to other methods. A dog with a no bark collar will have to endure it usually for only a few days before there is noticeable correction. Secondly, the stimulation emitted by a no bark collar is distracting, not painful. It is far preferable to other methods that may injure the animal. Lastly, this is a humane form of discipline because there is no fear or intimidation that takes place. If a dog is able to identify their trainer as the source of their correction, then repeated training attempts may form an association in the dog’s mind between the trainer and a negative correction. This is certainly not desirable in training at all, especially if it is with a family pet. By removing the trainer from the scenario, dogs continue to feel the same bond with their owner or trainer as always.

To be safe, always be present when using a new form of correction for the first time. Make sure that any electronic dog training collar in use is comfortable and appropriate for the dog’s size and temperament. With safety in mind, there is no reason to not take advantage of the features offered by modern no bark dog collars.
